Newsletter Cover Analysis

The Deyes High newsletter cover is overall very plain and simple. This is due to the fact that it is all in black and white, as well as being all symmetrical. The use of making everything black and white tends to not stand out. The black and white, pencil drawn image gives the school an outdated look, that also makes the school seem unappealing to some people. The newsletter uses several different fonts, one of which is Comic Sans, which makes it seem unprofessional and not put together very well. The masthead, however, is large and bold, which does stand out to catch the reader's eye. It also indicates that the school is a "Specialised Science College", which adds an appealing aspect to school.

The St. Ambrose Barlow newsletter cover, however, is overall quite professional looking. The professional image is created by using a Redtop masthead, commonly found on newspaper and magazine covers in order to immediately draw attention to the newsletter, consistency of colour and features of magazine and newspaper covers. The use of 4-colour images gives the newsletter a modern look as well as completing the anchorage. Several aspects of it are features that are frequently found on magazine covers, such as; a headline, puff, pug, byline, etc. The whole look of this newsletter resembles an online or article page, which creates an unprofessional image. Like the Deyes High newsletter, the use of Comic Sans font further adds to the unprofessional outlook. Also like the Deyes newsletter, this newsletter promotes the fact that it is a "specialised college", in order to appeal to certain groups of people and maintain a respectable status.
